Develop Your Child’s Sustained Attention Skills with the A.L.E.R.T. Technique

Sustained attention is a skill that can be strengthened with the right support and strategies.

Many people assume ADHD is simply about a lack of attention. However, individuals with ADHD often have plenty of attention—it’s just directed toward whatever their brains find most engaging. This can make traditional focus challenging, especially when faced with less stimulating tasks. The good news is that sustained attention is a skill that can be strengthened with the right support and strategies.

At REACH ADHD Coaching in Perth, we help families reframe attention as something that can be actively developed. Through our A.L.E.R.T. technique, we provide practical steps to improve focus and sustained attention for children with ADHD.

The A.L.E.R.T. Technique for Improving Attention in ADHD

The A.L.E.R.T. acronym offers a roadmap for families looking to build their child’s focus, organise their study environment, and manage attention.

Here’s how:

A — Active Breaks
Regular, active breaks help refresh focus and maintain energy levels. Try the Pomodoro technique to help manage this. Light activities like stretching, walking, or playing a short game can reinvigorate the brain and improve concentration.
“Short, active breaks keep the momentum going without feeling drained,” says Fiona Alexander

L — Limit Distractions
An organised, clutter-free workspace minimises distractions and makes it easier for children to stay on track. Keep unnecessary items out of sight, limit background noise, and avoid digital distractions. Visual cues can help reinforce good focus habits in the space.

“A well-organised space mirrors a well-organised mind,” says Romney Taylor. “When kids work in a clean environment, they feel calmer and more in control.”

E — Encourage Movement with Fidgets
Using fidget tools can make learning more engaging and help children maintain focus. Items like stress balls, fidget spinners, or tactile toys provide subtle movement that keeps the brain alert and enhances concentration.
“Fidgets offer a simple way to keep hands busy and minds focused,” says Debbie Hirte “They help channel excess energy and improve attention during learning tasks.”

R — Routine and Structure
Consistency is key to building a sustainable focus. Set up predictable study and break times, and use clear cues to signal transitions. Knowing what to expect reduces stress and increases children’s ability to stay on track.
“A structured routine is like a roadmap for attention. It helps kids feel prepared and able to engage,” explains Fiona.

T — Time for Rest
Good sleep is crucial for maintaining focus and mental clarity. Encourage a calming bedtime routine and limit screen time before bed. Quality sleep supports resilience, attention, and learning.
“Good rest powers up the brain,” says Romney. “When kids have quality sleep, they’re ready to take on the day with focus.”
